by Shauna Burke, April 3

On Friday March 28, six students from the St Paul Regional High School competed in Northeast regional skills competition held at Portage College in Lac La Biche.

The students competed in Welding, Carpentry, Hairstyling and Baking.

"I am very excited," said baking/culinary arts instructor Connie Lansiedel about her team, in an interview before the competition. The students arrived at school early in the morning and stayed late after school to practice in preparation for the big day, Connie explained.

On the day of the competition, the baking students, Kate Blair, Annika Malo and Alysha Hippisley each prepared a three layer sponge cake, buns, bread and a braided loaf. Ian Stafiniak, culinary arts, prepared a stuffed, roasted chicken with Spanish rice pilaf, broccoli and carrots.

"This is the most number of students I have had for many years," said Connie, adding, two of the students are in grade 10 and will have the opportunity to compete again next year and the year after.
